-- see also the April 24, 2024  meeting summary

  1. Welcome and Introductions:

Greg Helland, FOMP President; Chris Jordan, Marymoor Park Administration, King County Parks; Glenn Eades, Eastside Audubon Bird Loop, neighbor;  Michael Hobbs, Marymoor Bird Survey, FOMP Secretary; Angie Heyer, Seattle Event Solutions (Concerts, Clise)

  2. Recap of LPGA US Open:

9600 cars total over the 4 days.  Michael pointed out that there were no signs and very few personnel at 5:00 a.m. on Thursday, although dozens of guests had arrived, leading to quite a bit of confusion.  Michael also pointed out that Lot G didn’t need to be closed Thursday and Friday, though Lot B was not overrun, so tiny harm, no foul.

  3. Marymoor Park Traffic Study:

Brief, but good data gathered.  Daily use plus two concert events, plus surveys.  Angie asked about trying to really target a day with a conflict between multiple events.

  4. CIP/Project/Facility Updates:

    a.    Eastside Audubon Birdloop:
    – Trying to get maples to survive; this time looks more promising. No Work Party for July.   Hawthorns continue to be winning, to the frustration of Eastside Audubon.  EAS is still working on their long-term plan consolidation.

    b.    Marymoor Community Gardens:
    – May want to build a shed area for tool storage, and they’d like to do some weed control along the south fence of the area.

    c.    R/C Field (MAR/C):

Last week's annual Open House & Airshow:
    • Delayed by 1 week to June 22 due to bad weather on original date (June 15)
    • Parking was manageable without major disturbance by golf tournament
    • Attendance was excellent, with very broad representation from our membership, guests, visitors and "walk-ins"
    • Flying activities and exhibitions went smoothly and entertained the crowds
    • Food was delicious and many non-members enjoyed our gourmet chef's cuisine (Chris' famous Taco al Pastor)
    • CM Baldoucci was present to enjoy the festivities and had an initial flight lesson - vowing to be back for more!
Summer training continuing with record attendance; over 10 graduates so far and counting!
    Construction update:
    • We're in the home stretch
    • structures and ADA path/parking are done (modulo signage)
    • site restoration is about 50% done; awaiting confirmation from HEC re: hydro seeding
    • Ribbon Cutting ceremony is being planned; Stay tuned
Coming up next month we have our Scale Model event (July 13: 9 - 4)

    d.    Off-leash area (SODA):
    – Completed Lot D fence post replacement.  Removed some weeds.

    e.    Cascade Music Collective and Seattle Event Solutions (Concert venue):

    • Major problems with vandalism during concert set-up.  First concert was cancelled and the 2nd was postponed (by the band) to July.
    • They now have a general store with items like sunscreen and popcorn etc.
    • They are planning to have shuttle service once Light Rail comes to Marymoor.

    f.    Maintenance: – Tree trimming, gutter cleaning, etc.  Had to deal with a semi-truck that got stuck in a roundabout.  Hiring continues for summer.  Ramping up for July 4th and the very crowded concert season in July/August.

    g.    Event Update:
    – Movies start July 10th.  Many concerts in July.

    h.    Sound Transit Light Rail:
    – Fencing continuing, tree watering, etc.  Trees dying already.  Gateway trail pushed out to 1st Quarter 2025.  Rain garden should start development in August.

    i.    Cricket Facility Proposal:Proposal –
Hoping to get a face-to-face with County and proponents, but July meeting date won’t work for them.  August might be possible, or we might have an early meeting in July.

    j.    Capital Site Planning –
Parks will hold outreach meetings this summer on the working proposals.  Most of the plan is one of priorities for existing work items, rather than an update of the 1995 Master Plan.  Greg stressed that their really needs to be an analysis of just what uses should be supported in Marymoor Park going forward.  For example, baseball/softball has diminished in interest recently.  If cricket is coming on as a big sport here, then Marymoor should support recreational cricket.  If there is more demand for pickleball than for tennis, then why do we have tennis courts and not pickleball courts?   Research and analysis is needed.
