July 22, 2025 Meeting Summary

-- see also the June 25, 2025  meeting summary

  1. Welcome and Introductions: Justin Camputaro, Marymoor Park Administrator; Greg Helland, FOMP President; Michael Hobbs, Marymoor Bird Survey, FOMP Secretary; Glenn Eades, Eastside Audubon Bird Loop, neighbor;

  2. CIP/Project/Facility Updates:

    a.    Eastside Audubon Birdloop:

    • EAS had a work party on July 22, because Verizon wanted it’s workers out.  ~30 people 8:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
    • Michael mentioned that there are about 50 stalks of Tansy Ragwort in the SE part of the East Meadow.  He sent coordinates to Justin.
    • Glenn mentioned that the cricket Orcas contacted a past-president of EAS to try to promote the cricket stadium at Marymoor.

    b.    Marymoor Community Gardens:
    – MCGA donated about 20 bouquets to HopeLink!  Parks is working with MCGA on some faucet repairs.

    c.    R/C Field (MAR/C):
    – They had their Scale Event a couple of week ago, and it appeared to be well-attended.

    d.    Marymoor Velodrome Association: – Grand Prix last weekend, and Junior Nationals this weekend.  August 22-23:  50th Anniversary.  CPG has designated funding to do a track assessment, so that an analysis could result in repairs/upgrades.  The levy has some money penciled in for this work.

    e:    Off-leash Dog Area:
    • Active work battling Fox Tail grass, whose seeds can injure dogs.  This grass seems to favor shade areas under trees.  Control is very specific and tricky, but is underway.
    • Sound Transit is entertaining a resolution to allow dogs onto Light Rail, which would mean ST could be a good way to bring your dog to the park.
    • There are several trees, including one in the Heronry, that are dead or damaged.  They were scheduled for removal, but by the time that was going to happen it was the middle of nesting season, so that work has been postponed.

    f.    Cascade Music Collective and Seattle Event Solutions (Concert venue):
    – September 13th – Smokey Robinson concert cancelled.   An August concert was announced and then cancelled quickly.  This weekend’s concert will be a big one, with more than 5000 expected.  The actual capacity of the venue is 6500, but it is unlikely that will ever be met.

    g.    Concessions Updates: – Dog Hair coffee open.  Snack Shack is open.  And Chills, the ice cream truck, has been visiting the park.

    h.    Maintenance Items: – Clise gutter work underway, probably also on the cottage, and maybe some work on the Clise roof.  Windmill refurbishment underway.  Tennis courts are being refurbished, so they will be closed August 11th  through September 8th.

i      Events Updates: – India Independence Day Aug 8 (free parking).   CHOMP, August 16.   DroneArt with live music quartet and 400 drones doing a dance, August 17th.  Ganesh Festival September 5-7th.  Drive-in movies October 9th-25th (6 movies total, movies TBA).

    j:    Capital Site Planning:
    • Connection from ST to Marymoor Connector Trail; work was paused to assess archeological surveys, but is resuming.  Phase 2, with lights and a water main, will follow.
    • Paying for parking via Park Mobile is coming in late-2025.  There will be a service fee ($~0.25) for using Park Mobile.  Other machines will be continuing, and new machines are coming to replace those that have failed.  All will be credit-cared enabled  Greg asked if parking fees are retained by Marymoor.  The answer is not exactly.  All non-field revenue go into the Parks budget, but Marymoor is fully funded by Parks, even if it goes over budget (because those over-runs are usually associated with supporting revenue-generating events).

k:    Sound Transit Light Rail: – Will be monitoring noise/sound impacts from the new trains, though this is likely to be insignificant.

    f.    Cricket Facility Proposal: –  There is still no official proposal nor agreement.  Parks and The Orcas are still in conversation.  This would have to be a multi-use facility, but it would be reserved for The Orcas for ~16 weeks in the middle of the summer, and it would need to be natural grass which greatly limits other uses.  Greg pointed out that they are asking for ~20% of the Active Area of Marymoor, to be used for a very few weeks by a professional team.  This seems to be a huge, unreasonable ask.

  3. Marymoor Park Business Unit future planning – Justin would like to do a somewhat formal plan of how the park is operated over the course of each year.  He stated that Marymoor’s purposes includes being a regional park, it serves as an economic driver for Redmond and Bellevue (i.e. when special events are hosted here), it serves as a major revenue generator for KC Parks as a whole.

Justin’s job is the Marymoor Park administrator, AND the park business manager.  His goal is to try to identify various targets.  Very hard to document the nature of the discussion that followed.
  4. Other Business:  The August FOMP meeting will be on Tuesday instead of Wednesday, due to conflicts with a concert.

  5. Next meeting TUESDAY, August 26nd, 2025 in Clise Mansion
