August 26, 2025 Meeting Summary
-- see also the July 22, 2025 meeting summary
- Welcome and Introductions: Justin Camputaro, Marymoor Park Administrator; Greg Helland, FOMP President, online; Michael Hobbs, Marymoor Bird Survey, FOMP Secretary; Glenn Eades, Eastside Audubon Bird Loop, neighbor; Shai Hinitz, MAR/C, online
- Rain Garden and Marymoor Connector Trail Updates - Shazaad Jarrahian – Shazaad was unable to attend. We hope to get these updates in September
- CIP/Project/Facility Updates:
a. Eastside Audubon Birdloop: –
- They will concentrate working around the Viewing Mound slope this fall. Weed control is also underway.
- Michael mentioned the photo post. There is at least one of these short posts with a sign and a plastic bracket. One takes a cell photo there and posts it to a website where it is added to a time-lapse video. This is a joint venture between KC Parks and Eastside Audubon. One post is south of the EAS sheds on the west side of the trail. Not sure if there are others.
- Glenn was worried that when Dave leaves as Maintenance Head, that momentum would be lost on the hawthorn problem but Justin reassured him that the noxious weed team is on it.
b. Marymoor Community Gardens: – Their CPG-funded shed is now moving forward. They also got some Cultural Resources training so that they will be able to proceed without violating procedures. The garden is full of flowers and vegetables right now.
c. R/C Field (MAR/C): –
- The August Fun Fly and BBQ was a great success. Their end-of-season training class was tonight. Summer events are thus ended, but their fall/winter monthly meetings will be starting very soon.
- They had a water leak; Dave from facilities got the water shut off, and it was fixed a week later.
- MCGA is pleased with the parking pylons that ward off people inappropriate parking when major park events clash with MCGA events. Parks will be getting dedicated pylons so they can protect their own lot themselves.
- Shai asked about someone or someones who bring a kind of radio/WIFI testing equipment to the model airplane field. He’s not sure if this is legitimate and condoned. Justin said he’s not overly concerned, but he’d like to know more. Michael mentioned that he often sees such in Lot C on Thursday mornings.
- Shai asked about drone flying in the park. Normally, this is only allowed in the model airplane field, and for MAR/C members only. But there was a huge drone show in another part of the park (6000 people attended). Justin confirmed that one needs to have a permit, and MAR/C members are thus permitted. But the big event was permitted by Parks without going through MAR/C. Justin also clarified that MAR/C need not concern themselves with drone use in the park away from the MAR/C field.
d. Marymoor Velodrome Association: – Just celebrated their 50th anniversary with an event last weekend. Their last race is Monday December 15th; their last Friday race may be as soon as September 5th. They hope to have Junior Nationals again next year.
e: Off-leash Dog Area: – Salmon netting has gone in or is pending, and the southernmost swim beach seasonal closure has been completed. Hogs fuel annual work is about to commence.
f. Cascade Music Collective and Seattle Event Solutions (Concert venue): – August 30 and September 12 concerts have been cancelled by the artists, but there are still about 5 concerts to come.
g. Concessions Updates: – Dog Hair coffee open. Snack Shack is open. And Chills, the ice cream truck, has been visiting the park.
h. Maintenance Items: –
- Clise work that had been requested has been approved, at least for some of the repair and improvement work. Finally. Exact details about which projects that will be done this round are still TBD.
- Windmill: Blades were removed, rebuilt, and reinstalled. Many shingles have been replaced, and new stain and paint is ungoing.
- Tennis court rehabs will be complete in early September; new court surface and new lights.
- Gutter work ongoing on Clise and on the park office.
- Light Rail access pathway Phase 1 complete today. FOMP is still eagerly awaiting sidewalks and crosswalks to allow safe crossing of Marymoor Way. BTW, the Parks Levy that will fund that work passed with 70%+ Yay.
i Events Updates: – September 5 (5pm-9:30pm), 6, and 7 (11am-9:30pm): Ganesh Festival. Drive-in movies on 6 nights in October.
j: Capital Site Planning: –Proposed fencing at various places at Marymoor: This would be a no-dig fencing that looks like split rail, but it each connection point features a steel reinforcing rod vertically through the rails down to a concrete footing. This is easy to construct, requires no Cultural Resources investment, visually acts as a barrier (even if it is not actually difficult to take apart). Glenn pointed out that with a steel rod piercing the wood slats, it will be sturdier than the existing split rail fencing.
k: Sound Transit Light Rail: – ST access pathway Phase 1 completed today. FOMP is still eagerly awaiting sidewalks and crosswalks to allow safe crossing of Marymoor Way. Traffic counters on the trail from ST to the park are averaging around 200-250 people passages daily (could mean only 100-125 people if they all both come and go), but numbers are twice as high on major event nights.
l. Cricket/Multipurpose Facility Proposal: – There is still no official proposal nor agreement, but Parks is only interested in a multipurpose facility.
- Marymoor Park Business Unit future planning – Justin is actively seeking comments on what kind of data Parks should collect in order to figure out Park priorities.
- Michael suggested monitoring how many people use the boardwalk each day – tricky, since some people go out and back from the slough trail OR from Lot G, while other people walk the whole loop.|
- Glenn worried that some park usage is not measurable and that those park users will not be “counted”.
- Greg wondered if there is a way to measure the effect of additional pedestrian usage of the park w.r.t. the traffic data and the large (and expanding?) cut-through traffic? Justin stated that some measure of cut-through traffic numbers can be calculated by the number and ratio of people who pay $1 at the booth at the east end of the park during evening rush hours; those that pay there are almost certainly cut-throughs.
- Other Business: While the September FOMP meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, September 24th, FOMP is considering moving our monthly meetings to Tuesdays. Comments would be very welcome.
Next meeting, Wednesday September 24th, 2025 in the Art Barn
